Dear Parents/Guardians,

I hope you had a good Christmas although I know that many of you were visited by the gastric and flu type viruses.  We do not appear to be suffering as much now as we did in December but may I please put out a plea that you should not send children in or indeed return them to school when they are unwell.

Themed Week

This year we have decided to visit the geography area of the curriculum although we will as always be including aspects of all curriculum subjects which link to it.  The children will be focussed on “Around the World”.  Each class will have an area of particular interest and will look at anything and everything to do with it, e.g. the physical geography, the music, art, culture, history, environment, people, sport, etc.

Reception - Australasia

 Year 1  - Native Americans

 Year 2  - China

 Year 3  - Caribbean

 Year 4  - Africa

 Year 5  - India

 Year 6  - South America

We know that many of you will have “stuff” that could be used to help the children have a very positive experience.  If there is anything that you feel could be useful the teachers will be delighted to hear from you.

Ring of Steel

With this newsletter is a letter explaining our involvement in the photographs for the Ring of Steel.  The photographer will be here on 30th January.  Please make sure your return slip is here by this Friday.  If there is any problem do not hesitate to ring Mrs Wiegleb.  I’m sure she will be able to sort it out.

Pantomime Visit December 2008

Next Christmas there will be no pantomime in Aylesbury.  When I enquired about Milton Keynes theatre it transpired that the schools performances for next year started booking on 7th Dec 07!!!  There was only one performance left that could accommodate all of our school – So I booked it.  This means that we will be going to the panto on the Wednesday 17th December 2008.  It is too early to book coaches but we estimate that the cost will be in the region of only £15 per child.

Valentine Day Disco

There will be information coming from the Friends of School about the Family Disco they are organising on Friday 15th February.  Many parents have difficulty arranging sitters in order to enable them to have a night out.  We hope you will find the opportunity of having the whole family together suits many of you.  New rules have made it possible for us to get a drinks licence more easily, so we thought that we should try this and see how it goes.  We look forward to seeing many of you and a really good evening.

Our Shop on the website

Thank you to all of you who have used our website to purchase on-line.  The Friends of School have received a commission cheque for about £20 already.  Just a reminder that the website address is www.newton-longville-school.co.uk and whatever you buy will not cost you a penny extra.

Toy Bring and Buy

The School Council had an enormous success with their sale and made £230.18p.  Well done to those children and their friends who worked hard to organise this.  They decided half of the proceeds go to the Philippines to continue to help the Kanlungen project and half will stay with the School Council as a float for further projects.  They are now able to buy water bottles which they will sell to children who wish to have water available on their desk during lessons.

Thank you for your support on this first School Council commercial enterprise.

School Dinners

As we are no longer able to adjust orders after deadlines I thought it might be useful if we shared these deadlines with you (see attached sheet).  We hope this will be particularly useful if your child is absent and will enable you to be aware that order forms went out.  Also if your child is away on the deadline you could ring through the order and send the payment in when your child returns.

Holiday Club

Holiday Club will be operating over the half-term break.  Some of the planned activities include: cooking, craft work, den building, games day and an outing to Xcape for rock climbing and bowling.  Please contact 641706 to book any time for your child.

Finally I would like to remind you that the Easter weekend and the 2 week Easter holiday are 2 weeks apart.

Yours sincerely,

Krys Kuzminska

Thank you ! Thank You! Thank You!......for all the inventive ways you found to create spotty dress for your children. Through your generosity we raised the fantastic amount of £245.50 which has been paid into the Children In Need Fund. Thank you for the 25 mobile phones we received which are worth £5 each to the charity.

A big thanks goes to the School Council Representatives who organised the spotty dressing up day.

CROSS COUNTRY

wp53e153f6.png

On Saturday 10th November teams of boys and girls from Year 3,4,5 and 6 met at RAF Halton to run cross country races against other Buckinghamshire school.  Luckily it was a good day if rather windy and our young athletes did extremely well in all events.

Our greatest success was in the Year 3 boys race where our budding marathon runners succeeded in getting 2nd 3rd and 7th places.  WOW.  Not only excellent personal results and medals but also a gold medal for the team!!!

Congratulations to all !!

VICTORIAN EXPERIENCE

Newton Longville School held a Victorian day where they learned what a typical day over a hundred years ago was like

Year 6 spent a Victorian Day at school.  As part of their history studies about the Victorians they dressed up in Victorian clothes and were subjected to a “typical” day at school.  Hopefully they will appreciate how much more relaxed and fun school is now.  This was followed by a visit to the Stacey Hill Museum which is full of Victorian reconstructions.

Comic Relief Day

The toothbrush collection exceeded all our expectations and we will be sending Jessica off with a full suitcase.  We also had a donation of pocket combs, soaps and pencils.  Many thanks to all of you for supporting the collection and donating coins.  A fabulous £270 was raised, half of which has been paid into the Comic Relief Fund and half will go to the Kanlungen project directly.  They have promised to let us know how that £135 will be used.   The Hot Dog Lunch was as always a total success and our thanks must go to the PTA who took a days leave from work to come and provide our children with such a popular treat.  The red accessories certainly brightened up our day.
