Reading Intent

Rooted in Vision and Values

At Newton Longville CE Primary School, our reading curriculum is driven by our Christian vision:
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart.” (Colossians 3:23)

Reading is a fundamental gateway to learning, personal development, and lifelong success. Our curriculum is designed to foster a deep love of literature, develop fluency and comprehension, and empower pupils to explore diverse perspectives with empathy and curiosity. Early and sustained engagement with reading significantly enhances pupils’ academic, social, and emotional outcomes. It broadens their understanding of the world, strengthens subject-specific vocabulary, and enables full access to the curriculum.

Through regular reading, pupils build confidence, resilience, and critical thinking skills, becoming articulate, thoughtful learners prepared for the demands of the 21st century. Staff and peers play a vital role in modelling positive reading behaviours, celebrating literature, and embedding reading across all areas of teaching and learning. This whole-school commitment ensures that reading is not only a skill but a valued and visible part of our educational culture.

Writing Intent

Curriculum Intent

At Newton Longville CE Primary School, our writing curriculum is designed to empower pupils to become confident, articulate, and purposeful writers. Rooted in our Christian vision —
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart” (Colossians 3:23) —
we encourage children to approach writing with creativity, resilience, and pride.

Our curriculum is built on the principles of The Writing Revolution and follows a carefully sequenced progression from EYFS to Year 6.
